Morales to keep hands off De Lima— for now. Here’s why

The Office of the Ombudsman is unlikely to launch its own probe on Senator Leila de Lima over allegations she has been involved in the illegal drug trade, Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales said.
Facing reporters at the sidelines of a forum in Mandaluyong City Monday (Oct. 17), Morales said her office has yet to get hold of a lead that would convince it to start a motu propio investigation on De Lima.
“It’s not going to happen because lahat naman allegations itong mga ito,” Morales said when asked about the possibility of a motu propio probe being done by her office concerning the senator.
“Wala pa namang lead talaga that would prompt us to initiate our investigation,” she added.
Drug-related cases have been filed against De Lima before the Office of the Ombudsman’s Visayas office and the Department of Justice.
Morales said the DOJ should be given the opportunity to conduct its own fact finding probe.
Nevertheless, the Ombudsman said “the case will come to us” if the DOJ believes further investigation on the allegations against De Lima is necessary.
“When the case comes to us and if we believe the fact finding investigation is exhaustive enough to merit our preliminary investigation if there is any crime committed, then we will follow through with it,” she said.
