The ‘Willful Ignorance’ of the Filipinos and Its Major Contribution to This Country’s Doom

I’ve said this before and I will say it again:
The ‘willful ignorance’ and indifference of most Filipinos on matters that concerns their welfare i.e., government affairs, breeds more corruption in this country and is the main reason that we are barely improving.
Why?
Simple. Try to picture out a country where everyone is minding their own BUSINESS and leaves everything in the hands of the elected officials. The corrupt ones will just steal taxpayers money non-stop because nobody is paying attention to them. The stupid ones — a good example is our dear President — will keep on passing idiotic laws and bypassing existing laws because again, no one is paying attention to them.
When that happens, the country plunges into a deeper mess day after day after day — heading towards its ultimate doom. And when our country has finally deteriorated to the extreme, what can we do about it? Nothing.

There’s no bailing out of trouble when it’s already choking the life out of you.

That, my dear ‘willful ignorant’ co-Filipinos will happen to this country if we keep on PLAYINGdumb and acting indifferent to our country’s plight.
Oftentimes, I would stumble across entertainment forums and dumb comments from celebrity fanatics who prided themselves of knowing even the newly bought designer underwear of their favorite stars yet, when asked about the BBL or Iqbal’s Malaysian citizenship or China’s reclamation of Spratly Islands, they are bewildered — obviously ignorant that Spratly, Sabah and Mindanao will possibly land in China and Malaysia’s maps one day. See?
They know everything about their idolized celebrities but, they barely know a thing about their own government.
I remembered one conversation with a friend about my article, ISIS Covert Operations in Southern Philippines, ‘Ignored ‘ by the President. I vividly remember his shocked expression and bewildered questions upon reading the article and finding out about the thwarted bombing PLANS in MOA, Greenbelt and the US Embassy last year. Well, he have all the reasons to get shocked since he is a regular shopper in MOA.
Now, this friend of mine is very UPDATED on entertainment news and community gossips. He was always the first one to tell me when a neighbor bought a new dress or when there’s a catfight (women’s street brawls) in the community. What I find most amusing and at the same time, irritating was his question on who Iqbal is and what the BBL is all about. By golly, he doesn’t even know about Marwan’s plot to bomb Kalaw Street on the day of the Pope’s visit when he was there in Kalaw the entire day!
Prior to his reading the said article, we were discussing about my deep INTEREST IN the political affairs of the country. I was pissed off with his dismissive attitude saying, ‘it is useless to get involved and be stressed with our government affairs because there is no stopping corruption in this country.’
My friend is just one of the many Filipinos with the same annoying ‘wala akong pakialam (I don’t care)’ attitude.
If everyone will tread on this same ‘willful ignorance’ path, what will happen to this country?
Most likely, we will end up with a high rate of unaccountable crimes, substandard government buildings, empty treasuries, more corrupt officials, a 7,107 minus a few hundred islands in the Philippine map, more terrorists loose in the streets — a lawless and demoralized country.
All of that is most likely to happen if everyone will keep their ‘willful ignorant’ attitude on matters of the state.
Is this what we want, Filipinos?
Whilst there is no denying that every time a corrupt leader vacates the Palace, another corrupt one takes his/her place to CONTINUE the corruption saga, STILL there is always hope that one day, we will finally choose the right leader. Every time we fight for changes in the country, every time we vote for a new administration, there is always hope. No matter how minimal that hope is, I will cling to it. I will not stop hoping and aiming for that BIG CHANGE.
The last thing that this country needs is a bunch of ‘willfully ignorant’ and uncaring citizens.
Think about it.
